of Liege, Belgium
Jean-François (Jef) Focant is an Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department of the University of Liège in Belgium. He is leading the organic and Biological Analytical Chemistry group of the mass spectrometry laboratory. Main research interests are coupling of sample preparation procedures, development of new chromatography strategies in separation science, hyphenation to various types of mass spectrometric detectors through multi-dimensional systems, and implementation of emerging strategies under QA/QC requirements. Professor Focant has been active in the field of dioxin analyses for the last 10 years.

The Application of Large Volume Injection Techniques for Increased Productivity
Thermo Fisher Scientific (Bremen) GmbH, Germany
Dirk Krumwiede is an application specialist for HRGC-HRMS at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Bremen. He studied chemistry at the University of Bremen and received his PhD in analytical Chemistry. In August 2002 he joined Thermo Fisher Scientific (Bremen) GmbH and started in the application laboratory working with the MAT95 XP and later on with the DFS.

Donald G. Patterson Jr. earned his BA degree from the University of Northern Colorado and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Arizona State University. Following three years of post-doctorate research with Professor Carl Djerassi at Stanford University, he joined the Toxicology Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1979. He was a member of the Senior Biomedical Research Service within the Organic Analytical Toxicology Branch within the Division of Laboratory Sciences at CDC until his recent retirement after 29 years of U.S. Government service. He is currently President of EnviroSolutions Consulting, Inc. and his current interests include the development and application of new and novel methods for sensitive, specific, fast, and accurate quantitative analysis for environmentally significant compounds in human tissues. These human biomonitoring methods generally involve the use of rapid automated sample preparation coupled with isotope-dilution high resolution mass spectrometry and various other techniques such as multidimensional comprehensive gas chromatography (GCxGC). The goal of this research is to dramatically increase the laboratory throughput and sensitivity; thereby reducing the cost of large scale human exposure assessment for epidemiologic studies designed to assess any potential human health effects from exposure to environmentally significant chemicals. He has authored and co-authored more than 400 journal articles as well as 10 book chapters.

Analysis of POPs by HRGC/HRMS in the Dioxins lab of RCEES, CAS
Vice Professor, Institute is Research Center for Eco Environmental, Sinica Academia China
Prof Zhang Qinghua qhzhang@rcees.ac.cn works at Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences,Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. He employs sampling and analytical methods for POPs, especially for dioxins, PCBs, PBDEs determination in environment since 1995. He is investigating sources, levels, behavior, fate and impact of POPs in China. Managing the HRGC/HRMS in Dioxin Lab; Participated in three international inter-calibrations for dioxins and PCBs analysis; Participated in an inter-calibration for PBDEs held by USEPA. As guest scientist, he did research in the National Research Center for Environment and Health, Institute of Ecological Chemistry, Germany in 2000.
